The Promotion Race

Coventry were simply unstoppable. Their 97 goals scored and 95 points represents a team operating at a level rarely seen in the Championship. The Sky Blues were top by November and never looked back, eventually finishing 11 points clear of Ipswich.

Ipswich Town's return to the Premier League — after their last stint in 2022 — will be eagerly anticipated. The play-offs produced a thriller: Millwall beat Southampton, Middlesbrough edged Hull, and the final saw Millwall earn the final promotion spot in dramatic fashion.

Relegation

Charlton Athletic (53 pts), Leicester City (52 pts) and Blackburn Rovers (52 pts) were relegated to League One. Leicester, relegated from the Premier League just two seasons ago, endured a dismal campaign at this level. Blackburn also struggled throughout.

The Story: Coventry's Perfect Season

Coventry City's 95-point campaign is the greatest in the club's history. Under their manager they played fluid, attacking football that the Championship simply had no answer to. Striker Viktor Gyökeres — no wait, that's another club — their striker Haji Wright scored 28 goals and was the division's standout player.

The return to the Premier League after 28 years away is the culmination of years of careful rebuilding. Coventry fans will be dreaming about testing themselves at the highest level for the first time since 2001.

Looking Ahead

Coventry, Ipswich, and the play-off winner prepare for Premier League football. Charlton, Leicester and Blackburn face League One. The Championship remains one of the world's most competitive leagues.
